Hillston Calendar

Hillston

Carrathhol Shire includes the town of Hillston and villages of Goolgowi, Merriwagga, Rankin Springs and Carrathool. Each village is steeped in history, and unique in their appeal.

Now a major fruit and vegetable producing region, Hillston’s orchards and citrus groves stand in stark contrast to their parched surroundings. Here you can experience the beauty of the outback, while at Lake Woorabinda you’ll see kangaroos, echidnas, and an abundance of birdlife. Attractions such as the Red Dust and Paddy Melons Gallery, Hillston Historical Museum, Hillston Cotton Gin and the historic Willandra National Park showcase the area’s rich and diverse agricultural industry.

Goolgowi is the home of the famous horse trainer Tommy Smith and his family’s butcher shop still stands today. Stretch the legs and follow the Goolgowi Heritage Trail, or make use of the free BBQ at Pioneers park. Merriwagga lays claim to the Black Stump legend and the tallest bar in Australia. Visitors can pop into the Black Stump for a cool drink and learn all about the legend from the locals. Carrathool, located near the Murrumbidgee River, is a place for a spot of fishing and is home to the Carrathool Races, held every February. Rankin Springs is well know for their bird watching program, with bird hides located around the village, and a number of threatened species can be found in the district.
